In January 2016, Martin confirmed that he had not met an end-of-year deadline for release of the book before the sixth season. On January 10, 2017, Martin announced that he believed that The Winds of Winter will be released "this year." As of July 22, 2017, he confirmed being "still months away" from finishing the book.
Winds of Winter. update. The Game of Thrones creator expects the writers’ strike will be “long and bitter.”. Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon mastermind George R.R. Martin is back
And before the “LeAvE GEorgE ALonE!” Brigade chimes in- no. There is an implied agreement between an author and their readers when starting a series, that it will be finished. If I were to recommend someone books to read to scratch the itch left by no ASOIAF this is where I'd start: The Kingkiller Chronicle - Patrick Rothfuss. The Malazan Book of the Fallen - Steven Erikson. The Night Angel Trilogy - Brent Weeks. Mistborn - Brandon Sanderson.
